Vibal Foundation, University of San Carlos Launch Luciano P. R. Santiago Reader

In partnership with University of San Carlos Publishing House, Vibal Foundation launched Philippine Genealogy & Religious & Art History: The Luciano P. R. Santiago Reader on December 7, 2022 at the USC Downtown Campus. Edited by Dr. Jobers Reynes Bersales, the book is a definitive reader that features twenty-two of Dr. Santiago’s essays on little-known figures from the past whose contributions to our culture and history are just as significant as their more prominent counterparts.

The book is a study of Philippine culture and history that divulges a series of revealed memories of seminal Filipinos. Dr. Santiago’s definitive works will take the reader to the terra incognita of Philippine colonial history—the stories of liminal, transitional figures who occupied the often dimly illuminated interstices of Philippine colonial history during the Spanish rule.

His approach to historiography didn’t focus on grand sweeping narratives nor the interpretation of the zeitgeist of a historical moment. Instead, he employed the miniaturist’s compulsive attention to detail to the quotidian world of a vanished culture and the forgotten personages that inhabited it.

From the foreword of Ino Manalo, “Reading Santiago’s pieces is not just a pursuit of chronological events. It is also a form of remembering, of participating ever so briefly, in his world of real men and women who are living, loving, and clearing a path for themselves.”

Philippine Genealogy & Religious & Art History: The Luciano P. R. Santiago Reader is part of the Academica Filipina+ series. The interdisciplinary series pushes the boundaries of scholarly publishing with smart and thought-provoking works that explore the Philippine past and present.  Other titles in the series include More Hispanic Than We Admit 1 to 3, More Tsinoy Than We Admit, More American Than We Admit, More Tomboy, More Bakla Than We Admit, Sisa’s Vengeance,The World of Manila-Acapulco Galleons, Santo Niño de Cebú 1565–2015, Salungat: A Soledad S.
