Fifty Shades: Heritage Churches of the Cagayan River Basin

Vibal Foundation (VFI) will be launching Fifty Shades: Heritage Churches of the Cagayan River Basin by Dr. Javier Galvan Guijo at the National Museum of Anthropology from October 25 to 26, 2022. The newest addition to VFI’s Fifty Shades series highlights the Filipino heritage in the Spanish colonial era from the sixteenth until the nineteenth century.

Heritage Churches of the Cagayan River Basin

Heritage plays a big part in shaping the Filipino identity. Examining history, art, and tradition develops an awareness of nationality and gives light as to why we are the way we are. Fifty Shades: Heritage Churches of the Cagayan River Basin is a comprehensive architectural survey of the major heritage churches of the Spanish colonial era that were built due to the evangelization efforts along the Río Grande de Cagayan where the earliest Spanish colonization took place. Each survey is immensely intricate and discourses on the different aspects that made it unique. Finally, it unveils the talents behind its construction.

Dr. Javier Galván Guijo is an architect by profession. Guijo is greatly fascinated by the style and structure of the churches in the Philippines especially the Tumauini Church because of its purely baroque style. Guijo has been the director of Instituto Cervantes de Rabat in Morocco, Orán and is currently the director of Instituto Cervantes of Manila. In recognition of Guijo’s efforts to promote Spanish-Philippine relations, he was conferred the Order of Presidential Merit by Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and the Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Católica by King Juan Carlos I.
